The dundun is a Mandinka percussion instrument made out of a cylindrical hollowed trunk. Both ends are covered with cowskin and the instrument is placed in a horizontal position on a stand.
The dundunfola (dundun player) beats one of the ends with a piece of wood, while the other hand plays on a bell attached to the dundun by means of a metal stem.
The term dundun includes the kenkeni, the sangban and the doundounba, which range from the highest to the lowest register. The dunduns accompany the djembe to set the beat.
